the people behind the magic

Staff and Board

David Spencer, Founder and Chairman

At 19, Dave survived a devastating car accident, an experience that profoundly shaped his outlook on life. Through his recovery, he developed a positive, pragmatic perspective and began volunteering as a motivational speaker for amputees and trauma survivors throughout the Bay Area. He later expanded his community outreach while working for the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants. Inspired by his work with young people and wishing to utilize his hospital network, he then established Baykids. After earning an MBA, he founded SENSPA Wellness Center in San Francisco's Presidio. He is currently focusing on his nonprofit work which includes chairing the board of trustees at the Fine Arts MuseumS of San Francisco.

Mimi Rauschendorf Executive Director, mimi@baykids.org

Starting at a very young age, Mimi cut and glued together Super-8 films, obsessed with the idea of story telling. She worked as a line producer for many European feature films and TV shows, mostly in Berlin, Germany. After moving to the San Francisco, she worked on many indie feature projects in and around the Bay Area until she learned about Baykids. Mimi started as a volunteer editor and quickly became the filmmaker at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland and later UC Davis Children’s Hospital. She took over leadership in 2019 and Baykids means everything to her. UC Davis remains her hospital as a producer, where working with the patients fulfills her desire to play and tell stories. In her spare time, she likes to work in ceramics, mountain biking in Marin County and dogs, especially large ones.

Trey Houston, Producer, trey@baykids.org

At ten years old, equipped with a neighbor’s camera, Charles “Trey” Houston unlocked the immersive world of filmmaking and never looked back. He is a filmmaker / photographer who has been inspiring and teaching young people in the visual arts for more than twenty-five years. It is a joy for him to support young Baykids’ filmmakers to unlock and share their stories and creative ideas! In addition, he specializes in capturing the magic and vitality of the nonprofit sector, community organizations and small businesses. He lives in San Francisco with his beautiful wife and daughter.

Hope Marquardt, Producer, hope@baykids.org

Hope discovered her passion for the media arts in the 8th grade through volunteering for her local TV news station. Since then, film has taken her around the world—to Southern California for a bachelor’s in media studies and work as a production assistant, to the UK for a graduate degree in post-production, and many places in between. Today, Hope is back in the Bay Area as a versatile freelance video editor with a wide range of projects, including music videos, social media content, and documentaries. She loves getting to use her experience to encourage kids to find their own voice through visual storytelling, just as she did as a child.
