Creative Expression, Inspiration, and Connection

Our filmmaking programs give children a way to take control of something creative and important at a time in their life when they have very little control. We help kids find their unique story and express it through filmmaking. As kids learn new skills and immerse themselves in the creative process, they gain a much needed sense of pride. While they make movies, are celebrated in red-carpet events and online, and receive inspiration in workshops with film and tech industries professionals, children learn that their illness cannot drown out their voice or dim their boundless creativity.

“Many families have expressed to me how wonderful it was to see their child get out of bed and smile again.”

– Julie Pollman,
UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Teacher

Our Programs

In-Hospital Filmmaking

BayKids’ clinically trained professional filmmakers bring cutting-edge digital filmmaking equipment into the hospital to help kids make movies. Kids develop story ideas, write scripts, create props and sets, learn animation, act, and direct films. We honor and nurture each child’s unique vision. Some kids are driven to explore their illness, others want to have fun creating a fictional story, while others want to make a movie to help other kids going through illnesses. Our program is tailored to the unique needs and desires of each child.

Outpatient Filmmaking

Our Outpatient Filmmaking program brings the In-Hospital program into the homes of children with serious illnesses who do not need to be in the hospital. Our professional filmmakers work with children one-on-one to help them develop and film their movie. Often our teams work with children over many sessions to help them make in-depth, longer form films.

Mentoring from Industry Experts

BayKids continues to support and inspire kids after they have left the hospital. Our mentoring program, held onsite at exciting locations like LucasFilm, Dolby, and Apple, gives kids the opportunity to meet and learn from film and tech industry experts. Events include tours, workshops, and demos where kids learn about different aspects of filmmaking and technology and get a behind-the-scenes look at how films are made. In addition to being creatively inspiring, our mentoring program serves the important role of building a nurturing community for kids who have had, and may still be going through, serious illnesses.

Corporate Partnerships and On-Location Shoots

Through our network of generous film and technology companies, we provide additional exciting opportunities for our kids. Companies hold on-location shoots where children get to work with industry film and tech experts to shoot and produce their films. Corporations partner with us to set up volunteer programs where employees use their film, marketing, graphic design (and more!) expertise to help BayKids fulfill its mission. We are always looking for new, innovative ways to partner with corporations.
